The following public school districts provide bus transportation to Alter: Bellbrook-Sugarcreek, Centerville, Jefferson Township, Kettering, Miamisburg and West Carrollton. Please contact your district's Transportation Department with specific questions. Students who reside in the Dayton Public school district are eligible for RTA passes at a reduced rate.
We are not Catholic. Will I be taking religion courses?
Yes. All students are required to take Theology every year, and both Catholic students and non-Catholics have an equal opportunity to succeed. These classes provide the necessary foundation for a system of values by which our graduates may guide their lives. All students participate in our four year retreat program as well as monthly Masses.
What is the average class size?
Our student to teacher ratio is 14:1 with an average class size of 22 to 26 students per class. Some elective classes are even smaller. Every effort is made to keep class sizes small so that students receive the attention they deserve.
Sports are a big part of my life right now. What type of sports do you have?
Alter offers 24 different sports programs for boys and girls. Sports vary by season; we offer a full complement of fall, winter and spring choices with "no cut" sports in each season. Learn more by visiting the Athletics pages.
I don't consider myself an athlete. What types of activities are available for me?
Many Alter students pursue other extra-curricular interests and they are proud to flourish in areas other than athletics. Nearly 35 different clubs, organizations and interest groups are available to our students. Getting involved in extra-curricular activities is a great way to meet other students as well as spend time doing something you love. For additional information, please visit the Student Life pages.
I am worried that if I come to Alter I will have trouble making new friends. Is it difficult to meet new people?
Many students enter Alter knowing only a handful of students from their school so all students are in the position of having to make new friends. All incoming freshman are matched with a Big Brother/Big Sister through Campus Ministry. Every year students participate in an orientation process designed to help with the transition to Alter. In large part, students make friends through extra-curricular activities, athletic and intramural programs.
What percentage of Alter students are college bound?
On average, 97% of Alter graduates are accepted and enroll at premier academic institutions across the country, majoring in a wide variety of fields of study. Recent graduates have been welcomed at Boston College, Brown, Case Western, Cincinnati Conservatory, Cornell, Dartmouth, Drexel, Holy Cross, Miami, Notre Dame, Tulane, U.S. Air Force Academy, University of Dayton, Wake Forest and Xavier University.
